Whats the experience we get when we meditate?
It’s a valid question. There are many possible answers. Here are a few to consider. First, mindfulness is the act of becoming aware of your awareness. It doesn't matter what state you're in, whether you're thinking about a movie or a book. All that stuff becomes apparent when you start to meditate. That's fine! That's what the human mind is made of. It's all there.
What happens when we keep at it?
We can achieve this if we meditate more. This is what I know because I meditate often because I have to. (Laughs.) I find that after 45 minutes to a half-hour, my mind can get past all the chatter, and things begin to shift for me.
Most of us think that we're our thoughts.
After some time, we begin to recognize ourselves as the context and not the content. Most people think they are their thoughts, emotions, and bodies. It's how we experience it. It is also fairly true.
When we relax into the openness, everything will come from us. It is possible to stop identifying with the content and start being free. The content begins to expand and then we begin to think... Oh! It expands, and we begin to see the whole of the universe in the context where everything happens moment by moment.
We ask: What does it mean to be context-free?
The great mystery of the Self is revealed to us, and we can go beyond this. It's not limited by the limitations of time. We are one with everything in the moment. And we're also one with everything that has ever arisen or will ever arise. Because we--as context and presence--are not restricted by time, we can be one with everything. Time is only one part of the content that arises out of pure awareness.
You are the context, no matter what your moment is. We are the context.
What happens when we meditate?
We can feel deep joy, deep memory, and deep presence when we combine these elements in meditation. You can return to your world and live from a place of freedom. This allows us to choose to be wiser, more skillful, more joyful, and more forgiving--for ourselves as well. Right?
Dr. R Walsh, a psychiatrist, and teacher who is also an award-winning author, stated that spiritual growth happens one body length at a time. As we constantly fall on our heads, we make mistakes, try to do better, do things that will be kinder and wiser, or lose years of life in certain directions. But then, we return. We do come back. However, it is easy to get lost in the content and forget that we are the context. We need to practice this constantly. It's just like being in a bathtub, to get yourself cleaned. Why should I shower again? (Laughs.) Because no one wants to be around your bad smell. You make people smell bad. Also, you smell bad.
Hey, I'm not anymore existentially lost!
We can begin to identify or experience the context and understand the content of our individual self at a deeper level, a soul-centric, level. "Hey, I don't existentially lose! I know who and what I am. I am who I was always have been. All worlds exist in my and your being. We can then act from this soul-centric level.
What other things do happen when we meditate?
Nondual experiences are not enough to allow us to live in blissful ignorance. We must return to the real world. It doesn't take perfection to become bodhisattvas. We can all become bodhisattvas, (who live in the world, keep the wheel of life, and help alleviate suffering for all beings). This role can be played with greater wisdom, compassion, and skillfulness. We also have the ability to trust the intuitive nature of our inner wisdom. This is when it becomes truly extraordinary: we can face any situation with a clear mind and a clear heart.
It is time to get up and start living!
Practice is key. We have to wake up, now. This is an important time in our evolutionary process. It’s going to either go horribly or wonderfully. We cannot get lost in the environment. We must get out of the context and be able to remember who and what are we.
