Experimental Research on Binaural Beats for Pain Relief

The study included 36 US people with diverse types of chronic pain, with a median age of 47 years and ages ranging from 26 to 69 years. There were four dropouts from the trial.

Participants listened to two recordings for 20 minutes each day: one using TBB at 6 Hz (TBB intervention) and one using a placebo of a nonbinaural beat tone of 300 Hz (sham intervention). Both interventions lasted 14 days, with some participants hearing the TBB intervention first and then the sham intervention, while others heard them in reverse order. The interventions were delivered to participants via an Internet Web site or a compact CD. Interviews were held in person or over the phone, with e-mail support.

 The findings confirmed the hypothesis that a TBB external audio strategy was beneficial in reducing participants' reported pain severity.
